Casting my Nets

Updated: Apr 20, 2023

Although Sam (my previous entry) was my first post he hasn't been my first attempt at casting, these little fishies have been. I thought I had a pretty good idea of what to do, but as I soon found out, I really only had the most rudimentary concept. Although I am delighted with how these little creations popped out I quickly saw areas where my newbishness telltales shown through like blinding headlights.

My very first cast really came out great, the seams were not terrible and it was a WHOLE FISHIE! Which turns out (no pun intended) to be a bit of a fluke! I learned something I'd long since forgotten from jewelry classes, about high and low points, and escape routes. NOT to mention how nice a vacuum chamber must be to destroy those pesky bubbles. However! Not to be dissuaded with the sad reality of limitations and my imperfect final product, I thought to myself "Well, I guess I can sculpt on this- and it'll make them a little more unique from each other."

I was also thinking (if you haven't guessed already I do that little trick -think- a fair bit) I might paint them a simple quickie paint job so I wasn't "over invested" with time, but still had a personal touch.

Mmm, okay, that was a neat idea. Unfortunately, I'm not built that way, I just can't seem to do "quick." I get sucked into the most ridiculous things that my brain and hands can't just leave alone.

What can I say, I really love this kind of thing, I love letting the piece tell me what it should look like, what patterns, what color... whatever.

But quick they are not, it's nice to have multiple copies to experiment with, instead of just the original, but every cast after the original was defunct and needing patching/reworking. As an example, my blue friend here got both eyes resculpted, but as a result I don't think I'll be casting any more than the 7 of these I've tried so far.

So here is what I've developed so far..

All 3 are for sale @ $65 ea (plus shipping). All pieces have been hand painted and signed and sealed and approximately 5 inches at their longest point - I have 4 more as I've stated, which I could complete with color requests if someone were to get them to me before I plunge ahead and let fate choose their palette! Requests can be made the traditional way via email
